North Woods Adventure Camp for Military Connected Youth
Rhinelander, WI, February 24, 2018–Wisconsin National Guard Child & Youth Program held a winter adventure retreat at the Hanna Venture Base campground in Oneida County. The two day camping trip was a unique opportunity for military connected youth to learn new life skills, enjoy the pristine winter north woods environment, and build some great connections.
The goal of the winter adventure camp was to promote the use of daily mindfulness and resiliency practices while engaging in winter outdoor activities. Campers enjoyed night snowshoeing, tubing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, winter survival skills instruction, and a competitive, double elimination broom ball tournament against the staff. Wisconsin Child and Youth Program Coordinators (CYPC) led campers through a resilience workshop that explored goal setting and optimism by “Hunting the Good Stuff”.
“My favorite part of this weekend was going out at night and snowshoeing. We learned so many new “adventure” tricks such as learning you don’t need a light when you have the light from the sky and how to identify different tracks. It was also a great bonding experience for those who went.” Samantha C., 17, Slinger, WI.
A core group of youth at winter camp are members of the State Teen Panel (STP) who work with the Wisconsin CYPCs as representative voices of all youth who have parents in the Wisconsin National Guard. The STP members took advantage of the excellent facilities to meet and work through various business items and conduct STP membership outreach.
“I enjoyed getting to meet new people and do some fun winter-time activities. I especially enjoyed the opportunity to sleep outside. I’m glad for the chance to experience the STP and how we will operate in the future.” Chris K., 14, Watertown, WI
